About.....
As a kid, my Dad introduced me to scale modeling. Before long, my ceiling was covered in model aircraft suspended by lengths of cotton and shelves crammed with vehicles and tanks. In my home town, there was this amazing model shop and I would spend ages amongst the wooden shelving looking for my next project…. but then it all changed.
When I was 13, I was introduced to Warhammer 40k and tabletop gaming. I loved it and while I was rubbish at it, I loved using the skills and techniques I had learned to paint the detailed realism of scale models into these tabletop miniatures.
But then life happened… I went to work, got married, went back to university, started a new career, had a kid, then another….. and then another for good measure. I had not picked up a paintbrush in over a decade when someone bought my eldest a 1:72 scale Airfix model of a Red Arrow Gnat for Christmas and later a box of Tau fire warriors. As I helped them build these models (doing my best not to take over)… I couldn’t help thinking “that looks like fun”.
Before I knew it I has buying stacks of models, paints, and glue. But I could not believe how much the hobby had changed. There were so many new bits of kit and different techniques. But what amazed me was that sitting in the largely separate camps of scale modeling and tabletop gaming was how little the kit and techniques crossed over. Talking to friends who were also getting back into modeling, they had not heard about loads of stuff outside of that game’s meta. But it got me thinking…. what else is out there?
So back in early 2021, I launched Flying Raven Studios initially as just a YouTube channel with Ben, a friend of mine. The channel aimed to help people explore the massive and often confusing world of miniature modeling. We knew there were so many different techniques, bits of kit, and amazing models available to try out and adapt to your style and hobby. Whether that be building and painting tabletop miniatures, painting display pieces and busts, terrain, and dioramas, through sculpting, or 3D printing your minis. From the beginning, Flying Raven Studios aim to explore all the options available, cut through the fluff, and marketing to give you the best info so you can get the most out of your hobby.
As Flying Raven Studios grew, I would often have people getting in contact asking for links to bits of kit I had tested, or other questions. Therefore FlyingRavenStudios.com was born to pull everything together in one place and help you explore the whole world of miniature modeling and find the perfect solution for your project
